Welcome
Thank you for stopping by. I had a number of specific purposes for setting up this site: showcase resume, network, blog and professional nonsense. Then I decided I do enough professional stuff. This is mine. I'm blowing off steam and playing instead. Eventually, this will be my doormat, lit file, blog and junk drawer. I'm going to let it take shape on its own and see where it goes.
Despite the name, Saffron and Mastic is not a cooking site. I picked that name as an homage to dissonance. It is a strange combination of ingredients from a greek ice cream recipe. They taste awful together. Somehow, they still work in ice cream. I feel the same way about several things I combine. My creations often feature unsteady balances between things which don't harmonize. If they do, it's either by accident or they secretly belonged together before I outed them. If I'm not messing with awkward relationships, I glorify things people dismiss. I pick sapphire over diamond. I pick peridot over emerald. I idealize dark haired green-eyed beauties over blue-eyed blondes. Different gets my attention.
For kicks and funs, I write. I'm presently working on a number of stories I have fun with. I'm not posting them, but I have some of my poetry up. I also want to post short stories and script excerpts as writing samples. In the meantime, feel free to click around and read. I'll add more as it comes to me.

Who the What?
AEL and Moskevyu are my noms de plume. Moskevyu sounds Russian, but it's really just gibberish. It means nothing, which enables me to project whatever I want. In real life, I am a lot of things. I'm a Hastings College (English, '95) and University of Colorado (Film, '98) alumnus. I spent many years working in television and my resume features past employers such as Level(3), Viacom, Tribune Broadcasting and FSN Rocky Mountain which is now Root Sports. My primary role was Video Editor (Avid and Final Cut Pro), but I have also worked as a Script Supervisor, Production Assistant, Technical Director, Floor Director, RF Operator (satellite and microwave transmissions), Camera Operator and otherwise extra pair of hands. It took a very long time to get that out of my system. I'm still open to freelance jobs. I'd love to get involved with documentaries and indie films. Independent productions are more fun, anyway.
I still work for others while working on my own projects. Leaving TV involved going back to school and I worried it would be too much commitment. It quickly turned into a welcome mental break and precious creative outlet. Double lives have their perks. If you're in a rocky place in your career, I highly recommend going back to school. Do something that doesn't relate to your profession. Be a Chef, Veterinarian, Nurse, Personal Trainer, Yoga or Pilates Instructor. Learn financial planning, real estate, photography, education or interior design. You could go for your Master's degree, but promise me it won't be more of what you already do. Unless it's honestly your passion (minus lying to yourself), please don't major in Human Resource Management. Too many people walk this Earth who only let themselves be one thing. They wind up in jobs which drive them to an early death either mentally or physically. I'm not claiming that leading a double life will bring euphoria, but you have a better chance of landing on your feet if you're ever caught by layoffs. My training includes writing, video editing, studio production, live-switching a broadcast, flying a satellite signal, noodling around a kitchen, performing Massage and Craniosacral Therapy, operating a forklift and running an eighteen-wheeler with a thirteen-speed transmission (these vintage instruction films are a hoot). I am also fascinated with Ashiatsu, Acupuncture and Psych-K. Before I'm done, I want to raise heirloom crops, start an industrial hemp farm and a small production winery. Limit myself to just one thing? No thanks. Monocareers are for sissies.
Keep living. Keep learning. Take risks and keep doing.
